So it was off to Rome. Our first 2 day stop...it was weird not having to pack for the next day. We arrived in the late afternoon and drove around to the city to check out the sites, the Colesseum, Victor Emmanuel monument, and the general craziness of Roman drivers. We got dropped off near the Spanish steps where my sister got accosted by a family of beggars. They even reached into her pockets to try and get her valuables...good thing she didn't have anything in there...and that other people from our tour were quick enough to pull off those pickpockets. From there we headed off to see the Trevi Fountain, supposedly the most beautiful fountain in the world. It was definitely the most beautiful one I've ever seen. Then it was off to the Pantheon and we had to find out own dinner that night. We found a place that offered a 3 course meal with a glass of wine for only 11 euro. Probably the best and cheapest meal we had so far. After that we met up with the whole group for some gelato. It was supposed to be the best, but I had to admit it wasn't very impressive.
The next day started off at the Vatican and St. Peters basilica. Unfortunately, when we lined up for the Vatican museum, they thought it would be at least 1.5 hrs before they would let us in...but it turned out it was only 15 min...but we had already wandered off to see other sites. I guess we'll just have to go back sometime to see the Cisteen Chapel. But seeing St. Peters was really breathtaking. Truely awe inspiring to something so ornate and huge. We also wandered around a saw a castle and revisited the Trevi fountain, the Pantheon, and the Victor Emmanuel monument before heading out to a free dinner. On the way, we found a really good gelato place called San Crispino .Afterwards, we walked back through St. Peters square to catch the train back to the hotel.
