My two photographic lighting heroes teamed up to a 14,000 mile tour around the country…in a bus no less. So of course, I had to go see them. This was a perfect excuse to meet up in Austin as well, which made it 2 weekends in a row. My buddy Mike flew down from Detroit, and Doug rode in from Houston on his new Kawasaki. Friday was long day of seminar learning and they somehow managed to get the bus in the convention center…pretty cool. Here’s the final shot of the day. Some of the audience helped to light the scene.
Then on Saturday we had some Flip Happy Crepes for breakfast and saw Doug off as he was p-whipped had stuff to take care of at home.
Here’s one of my best portraits of Doug taken during the excruciating long wait for crepes.
With full bellies, Mike and I headed off to Precision Camera to see what gear he couldn’t live without. Bought a couple of little things, but didn’t go overboard. Feeling hungry again, it was time to head off to Salt Lick BBQ in Round Rock. On the way out we decided to do a little Off Camera Flash with the Canon E-TTL system…of course we couldn’t get it working right, so we just put the strobes into and manual and figured it out with our brains…funny how that works.
No trip to Round Rock would be complete without a stop at Round Rock Donuts…
That night we met up with my friend Anne and some of her friends to put our new found knowledge to work. Aurore and Cedric were the first to volunteer, and we had a blast. You can see the results of our shoot at the Capital here. Below are the highlights.
Finally Sunday was a day to relax and head home. We stopped off for breakfast at Bouldin Creek Café…which moved to a new location and seems much more commercial than it used to be. The food was still excellent.
Then is was off to Bubble Tea at Coco’s Café before taking Mike to the airport. It was also the perfect place for some impromptu portraits with the G12. Definitely one of the most fun weekends I’ve had in a long time.
